While Rudy Mae parted my hair in small straight sections to begin braiding, she began to hum a sad sweet melody. It was the one she often sung when I was a child. It had made me smile hearing my mother sing the old hymnal. But unlike my childhood, the familiar tune didn’t sooth nor caused me to smile. Instead, it sliced through to my already fractured soul.
